Defense Attache Saigon: RVNAF Quarterly AssessmentsStatus: Available for Ordering The Defense Attache Office, Saigon The Defense Attache Office, Saigon was activated 28 January 1973 by Major General John E. Murray. In addition to the traditional functions of defense attache, DAO Saigon also assumed the advisory duties and supervision of military assistance programs from the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam when it stood down in the aftermath of the cease-fire negotiated that month at the Paris Peace Conference. DAO Saigon operated from the former MACV compound at Tan Son Nhut airbase with field offices located in Da Nang, Pleiku, Qui Nhon, Nha Trang, Bien Hoa, Long Binh, Nha Be, Dong Tam, Binh Thuy and Can Tho. It was authorized a staff of 50 military and 1,200 civilian personnel. The DAO Saigon compound became a central evacuation point when North Vietnamese army units closed in on Saigon and the RVN government crumbled. Its personnel were evacuated on 29-30 April, 1975. RVNAF Quarterly Assessments As part of its responsibilities DAO Saigon issued quarterly assessments analyzing the military situation in the Republic of Vietnam ("RVN"). Topics in the assessments included: Threat Assessments; the Friendly Situation; RVNAF capabilities, leadership, training, communications and morale. The Final Assessment included a chapter describing the planning and events related to the evacuation of Saigon. These assessments are a valuable record of events leading up to the fall of the Republic of Vietnam from the perspective of the US military office in Saigon. The assessments were partially declassified in March 1981. The sanitized versions are presented here. This collection contains approximately 1,947 pages.
